Community Insights, a division of SociaLink, helps the Western Bay of Plenty social and community sector build confidence, skills and trust in using insightful data to inform and enhance the work we all do.

If you are a registered charity, when submitting your annual return to Charities Services you will be asked to report on the number of volunteer hours provided to your organisation during the year. This information can also be useful when applying for funding, especially for grants such as Match Funds where you can use volunteer hours to offset the funds you are applying for.

For organisations who employ staff, volunteering could be limited to board members and events, while other organisations may be solely reliant on volunteers to run all aspects of the organisation. We see many organisations who say they have no volunteers, but for most part for-purpose organisations’ boards are unpaid.

Regardless of how many volunteers you use and how often, a register to record the hours as you go will make sure your numbers are as accurate as they can be (you may be surprised at how the hours add up) and will save time when it comes to reporting.

The Community Insights team has developed a number of resources for community groups to use including an excel template for Recording Volunteer Hours.

Download the template here and adapt it to meet the needs of your organisation.

We also have a number of other templates and resources available on the Community Insights website.

Contact the Community Insights team if you need assistance to make any changes to customise the spreadsheet for your organisation.
